Band interview with Paper City Exile

The band Paper City Exile hails from Massachusetts, USA. These three guys love where they live but don’t ask if they’re in Boston!...

We are a group of three guys from the western end of Massachusetts. Our area is quite different from the Boston music scene. We see our area as being organic, laid-back, social, and low-keyed. We have everything we need right around us for getting the music produced.

Paper City Exile are in high school which presents some challenges to getting gigs…

Making personal connections has been tough since we are still in our teens and can't play most clubs.

Nonetheless...

The past several months have been really busy with several gigs each month. We are looking to fill our calendar for the quieter winter months as well.

So, apart from playing live shows, what else have Paper City Exile being up to?...

We create all of our own songs and have a number available online through major media outlets like iTunes. We are currently wrapping up our latest collection of music. It is an as yet Untitled LP of new as well as a couple of remastered songs. The recording, mixing and mastering are behind us and we will release it in the coming months.

To hear some Paper City Exile you can hit the following sites…

Our music is currently for sale on iTunes and CDBaby and it can be streamed on ReverbNation and SoundCloud.

What have they found is the best way to connect with their audience?...

Our largest audience is on ReverbNation where we have been regionally ranked #1 for most of 2016. We can reach out through that site with FanReach messages to 527 Twitter followers, 396 Facebook fans, and 228 email subscribers all at the same time. It's important to note that we do not buy Twitter followers as many groups do. What's the point?

And where have they made the most sales?...

Sales are best through iTunes but even still, we don't see sales anywhere approaching our fan base. People aren't buying music the way they did in the past.

So, have Paper City Exile developed any techniques to convert listeners or followers into customers?...

While we don't have a marketing philosophy, we can say, "Listeners can become fans, then die-hard fans, and finally customers." It's pretty much a straight line. We give a lot of music away and with free streaming so readily available, people are not as inclined to make a purchase. We have noticed an increase in traffic on all of our social media and we think it can be credited to Deuce Radio and Rob Saunders. He has found a way to get our music out there successfully. That is a key element in long-term success.

How about tools or apps to help build an audience?...

We use auto-replies for Twitter followers and retweets and an auto message for Facebook messages.

Does Paper City Exile spend much time on marketing?

As school students and music makers, we don't have much time for marketing. We kind of leave that up to our support team who also manage the finances and social media. Members of that team include parents and relatives, other artists like photographers, and graphic artists. We know that if we want to hit the big time, we will need to engage professionals such as publicists and marketers. That is when we think about the advantages of a label.

What is it that keeps Paper City Exile going when it all gets too hard?...

More than anything, we love to make great music, the very best we can possibly create. That is our focus and that's what drives us.
